Research progress of rare earth in high temperature alloys

2025-04-08

High-temperature alloys refer to a type of metal material with Fe, Co, and Ni as the matrix that can serve for a long time at high temperatures above 600°C. They need to withstand high temperature, high pressure, complex stress, and oxidative corrosion working conditions. They are widely used in aerospace engines, gas turbine turbine discs, turbine blades and other hot end components. Among them, Ni-based high-temperature alloys are the most widely used.

Rare earth is an important microalloying element. Adding trace amounts of rare earth elements to high-temperature alloys will have a significant effect on the structure and performance, such as purifying the alloy, changing the type and distribution of precipitated phases, improving thermoplasticity, improving mechanical properties and oxidation resistance, etc. The application of rare earth in high-temperature alloys has attracted much attention. At present, the research on rare earth in high-temperature alloys mainly focuses on the application of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Y, and Sc.

In addition to Y, La, and Ce, rare earth Sc also affects the mechanical properties of high-temperature alloys. At present, the application research of Sc in high-temperature alloys is mainly focused on powder high-temperature alloys and additive manufacturing high-temperature alloys. Sc not only reduces the content of impurity elements O and S by forming oxides, but also refines grains, reduces element segregation, and improves mechanical properties by eliminating cracks.
