"One shot" can restore and extend the life of lithium batteries

When a lithium battery is about to reach the end of its life, a new molecule can be injected into it to restore its original charging capacity. It can even allow a battery that can only guarantee 6-8 years/1000-1500 charge and discharge cycles to maintain 10,000 charge and discharge cycles, and the battery health level is almost the same as when it left the factory. The relevant research results were recently published in the journal Nature.

The research team successfully synthesized a new type of lithium carrier molecule - lithium trifluoromethanesulfinate (CF₃SO₂Li). This molecule was developed through AI-assisted design and is intended to replenish lost lithium ions for attenuated lithium-ion batteries, thereby breaking the life limit of traditional batteries. The core purpose of this molecule is to replenish lithium ions for batteries by "injection" and release them accurately during charging. At the same time, it is compatible with existing electrolytes and various electrode materials, has a low synthesis cost (accounting for less than 10% of the total battery cost), and has the potential for large-scale commercial use.

It has been proven that lithium trifluoromethylsulfinate (CF₃SO₂Li) meets various stringent performance requirements, and is low-cost and easy to synthesize. It has good compatibility with various battery active materials, electrolytes and other components, and can be successfully applied to soft-pack, cylindrical, square-shell and fiber-shaped lithium-ion battery devices. "Lithium trifluoromethylsulfinate (CF₃SO₂Li) can not only "replenish lithium" to the battery, but also turn into gas and be discharged after replenishment. It can be further recycled to prepare lithium trifluoromethylsulfinate (CF₃SO₂Li), forming an energy closed loop. This is not only environmentally friendly but can also greatly reduce the price of batteries."
